Can a young driver be added to company van insurance? Sometimes, but the insurer may set a minimum age, require named-driver approval, increase the excess or restrict certain vans. Check before the employee drives, even if the policy is described as “any driver”.
Any driver rarely means everyone
Fleet and company-van policies often attach conditions to any-driver cover. Drivers under 21 or 25, provisional licence holders and people with short licence histories may be excluded unless specifically agreed.
The van itself can affect acceptance
Power, value, payload and specialist conversion can matter. An insurer willing to cover a young driver in a small panel van may not accept the same driver in a high-powered or unusually valuable vehicle.
Give complete driver information
Provide the correct licence type, date passed, occupation, convictions and relevant driving history. If the employee later gains points or changes licence status, follow the notification terms in the policy.
Manage the work risk as well
Set rules on phone use, reversing, loading, fatigue and vehicle checks. A higher excess can leave the business paying more after damage, so decide in advance whether the company or employee bears it and check employment-law implications before making deductions.
