Can you insure a van without a current MOT? An insurer may issue a policy, but that does not make ordinary road use lawful or guarantee every part of the cover applies. If an MOT is due, the van normally cannot be driven on the road except within limited legal exceptions.

Insurance and MOT are separate

A certificate of insurance shows that a contract exists; it does not certify roadworthiness. Policy terms commonly require the vehicle to be maintained in a roadworthy condition whether or not an MOT certificate is current.

The pre-arranged test exception

A van can generally be driven to a pre-arranged MOT and, in certain circumstances, to repairs required after a failed test. The appointment should be genuine, the route reasonable and the van safe enough to drive. Insurance is still needed.

A failed MOT can change matters

Dangerous defects should not be driven on the road. Arrange recovery if the van is unsafe. Driving away merely because the old certificate has not yet expired can still be unlawful when a dangerous defect has been recorded.

Ask the insurer directly

If buying, restoring or collecting a van without an MOT, explain the plan and get the insurer’s answer in writing. Storage, recovery and road cover may need to be arranged separately.
