Can you insure a van before collecting it? Usually, yes. You can arrange cover to begin on the collection date once you know the registration and vehicle details, but the insurer may need the purchase, lease or keeper information to match the real arrangement.

Get the details from the seller

Ask for the registration, make, model, year, fuel type, value and any modifications. A dealer should also be able to confirm whether the van has been adapted, signwritten or fitted with racking. Guessing these details can produce the wrong quote.

Choose the start time carefully

Many policies begin at 00:01 on the chosen date; others can start at a stated time. If you are collecting in the afternoon, confirm exactly when cover begins. Do not rely on a certificate that starts the following day.

Driving it home

The van must be insured for the person driving it and for the journey being made. It also needs to be roadworthy, taxed unless an exemption applies, and normally have a valid MOT if one is due. Dealer trade plates or the seller’s policy do not automatically cover you.

If the deal falls through

Ask before buying how the insurer handles cancellation. An administration charge or time-on-cover charge may apply even if you never collect the van.
