Do you need to declare van racking? Yes, tell the insurer before fitting permanent or substantial racking. Insurers do not all treat it in the same way, but undeclared changes can cause trouble if they affect the van’s value, weight, use or repair cost.
Why racking changes the information
Steel or timber systems add weight and can alter load distribution. They may also show that the van carries tools or stock. Purpose-built manufacturer options may be treated differently from a home-made installation.
Payload still has to be respected
The usable payload is reduced by the driver, passengers, fuel, racking and anything carried. Insurance does not make an overloaded van lawful. Check the plated weights and weigh the loaded vehicle if the margin is tight.
Ask about the racking itself
Find out whether fitted equipment is included in the vehicle value and whether there is a limit. Tools and stock stored on the racks usually need their own cover and security conditions.
Keep a record
Retain invoices and photographs, and tell the insurer who installed the system. Secure it properly and avoid sharp or loose fittings that could become dangerous during sudden braking.
