Can you insure a van while converting it into a camper? Yes, specialist policies may cover a conversion in progress, but an ordinary van policy may not. Tell the insurer before removing seats, cutting openings or fitting gas, electrical, sleeping or cooking equipment.

Cover changes during the build

The vehicle may be off the road for weeks, yet it can still be stolen, damaged by fire or driven to a workshop. Agree which stages are covered, who may work on it and whether parts waiting to be fitted are insured.

List the planned alterations

Windows, roof changes, swivel seats, extra batteries, heaters, water tanks and furniture affect value and safety. Send a written list and update it if the plan grows. Photographs and receipts make the finished value easier to support.

DVLA body type and insurance are separate

DVLA may record the body type according to its current criteria, but an insurer can assess the vehicle as a camper conversion even if the V5C description does not change. Do not wait for a new logbook before discussing cover.

Gas, electrics and payload

Use competent installers for safety-critical work. Account for the finished weight and axle loads, including passengers, water and luggage. Ask the insurer whether it needs certificates or an engineer’s report.
