Begin with the range and model number

Auto-Trail has produced everything from panel-van conversions to large coachbuilt motorhomes. Names such as V-Line, Expedition, Imala, Tracker, Apache and Frontier describe quite different vehicles, and older models add further variety. Give the full range and model number shown in the handbook or sales invoice.

A registration search may begin with the Fiat or Ford base. Make sure the quotation also reflects the Auto-Trail body. This is especially relevant where the model has a coachbuilt rear body, an overcab bed or a large integrated equipment package that does not belong to the basic commercial vehicle.

Do not guess the plated weight

Similar-looking Auto-Trail models can have different maximum authorised masses. Read the plate and use that figure. It affects driving-licence entitlement and can also determine whether a breakdown operator is equipped to recover the vehicle. If it has been uprated or downplated, keep the paperwork and make sure the current figure is used.

Check what is already part of the motorhome

An awning, solar panel or media system may be an original option on one Auto-Trail and a later modification on another. When the quote asks about changes from standard specification, explain what is fitted and who installed it. Include tow bars, cycle carriers, levelling systems, non-standard wheels and engine remapping where relevant.

Glass and body repairs

Read the windscreen section carefully, particularly on larger models. Look for a separate glass excess and any maximum payment. Side windows, rooflights and habitation windows may not sit under the same part of the policy as the cab windscreen. The wording matters more than a general promise of “comprehensive” cover.

Long trips need two checks

If you take the Auto-Trail abroad, check both motor insurance and breakdown recovery. The policy may limit the length of an individual trip even where it allows a larger total number of days abroad. Recovery can have separate restrictions for vehicle size, weight and age.

Before comparing prices, have the exact model, registration, value, weight, annual mileage, storage arrangements and security details ready. Use the same honest information for every quote so you are comparing like with like.
