Does van insurance cover towing a trailer? Many policies provide some third-party liability while an allowed trailer is attached, but cover for damage to or theft of the trailer is often separate. The driver, van, trailer and load must also stay within licence and weight rules.

Ask what “trailer cover” means

A statement that towing is covered may only refer to injury or damage caused to other people. Ask whether the trailer itself is insured, whether it must be listed and whether contents are excluded.

Weights and driving entitlement

Check the van’s towing limit, gross train weight, trailer plated weight and the driver’s licence entitlement. The legal combination is governed by the lowest applicable limit, not by what the engine can physically pull.

Business trailers and specialist loads

Plant trailers, catering units, generators and refrigerated trailers may need specialist details and valuations. Hiring or borrowing a trailer does not automatically bring it within the van policy.

Security when detached

Insurers may require a wheel clamp, hitch lock, secure compound or particular storage address. Record serial numbers and photographs, and tell the insurer if the trailer is normally kept somewhere other than the van.
