Can an employee take a company van home? Yes, if the employer permits it and the motor policy covers that driver, the overnight address and the journeys involved. Taking the van home can alter both the insurance information and the tax position, so it should be agreed rather than left informal.

Tell the insurer where the van sleeps

A van kept on an employee’s drive has a different overnight location from one locked at the business. Give the regular postcode and security arrangements. If drivers rotate and the address changes, ask how the insurer wants this recorded.

Check the permitted journeys

The policy might allow business travel and commuting but exclude general private use. Make the rule clear to the driver. A weekend family trip should not be assumed to be covered because the employee may drive home after work.

Company rules still matter

Keep a written record of authorised drivers, licence checks, accident reporting, keys and prohibited use. Insurance does not replace the employer’s duty to manage work driving.

There may be a tax question

Limited private use and ordinary commuting can be treated differently from unrestricted personal availability. HMRC guidance should be checked for the current van benefit rules; the insurance schedule does not settle the tax treatment.
