Do Breakdown Services Work Abroad?

UK breakdown cover does not automatically provide assistance abroad. European cover may be included, bought as an annual extension or arranged for one trip. The countries, vehicle limits and services vary between providers.

Countries and journey limits

Check every country through which you will travel, including short transit journeys. Policies can limit the number of days per trip, total days abroad, vehicle age, dimensions or weight.

Roadside help and recovery

European cover may arrange roadside repair or towing to a local garage. Check who selects the garage, whether labour and replacement parts are included, and whether you must pay first and reclaim the cost.

Onward travel and accommodation

A policy may contribute towards a hire car, public transport or accommodation when repairs cannot be completed promptly. Limits, waiting periods and conditions apply, so these benefits should not be assumed from the words “European breakdown”.

Returning the vehicle to the UK

Repatriation can be valuable after a serious fault, but the provider may compare the cost with the vehicle’s value or the cost of local repair. Check whether passengers, luggage, caravans or trailers are included.

If you have only UK cover

Contact the provider and ask whether it can arrange chargeable assistance, but a breakdown that has already happened will not normally be covered by a policy bought afterwards. Use the official motorway or emergency arrangements required in the country concerned.

Before leaving

Carry the policy number and international contact details. Service the vehicle, check tyres and fluids, and take any safety equipment and documents required for the countries on the route.
