The previous owner’s insurance does not normally transfer with an inherited car. Before driving it, arrange cover in the correct name and deal with the registration, tax, MOT and estate paperwork that applies.

What happens to my insurance when I inherit a car?

Inheriting a car is often bittersweet – tied to the loss of a loved one but also offering a practical asset. Amid all the paperwork and emotions, one important question needs quick attention. What happens to the insurance?

Is existing insurance still valid when you inherit a car?

Sadly, no. Most insurance policies are tied specifically to the person who took them out.

  • Their insurance usually becomes invalid, often immediately if the policyholder passes away.
  • That means you may not be legally covered to drive the car, even if it is sitting safely on a driveway.
  • Some insurers may offer a short grace period while the estate is sorted – but you should not rely on this without checking directly.

Does a no-claims bonus transfer from the previous owner?

Unfortunately not. A no-claims bonus is linked to the individual, not the car itself.

When you insure the inherited vehicle, you start fresh – using your own no-claims history (or lack of it). But some insurers may take into account named driver experience or offer introductory discounts if you have previously driven insured cars without incident.

How do you get insurance on an inherited car?

Before you drive the car, you probably need your own insurance cover in place.

You have a few options: Whatever you choose, you must have cover before driving the car on public roads.

  • Temporary insurance: Useful if you might need to move the car or keep it somewhere safe while you arrange longer-term cover.
  • New permanent policy. If you plan to keep and drive the car, you will need to arrange a full annual insurance policy in your own name.
  • Adding the car to an existing policy. Some insurers may let you add the inherited car onto your existing policy if you already own another vehicle.

What if you decide not to keep the car?

If you intend to sell or scrap the car instead of driving it, you still have legal responsibilities.

Until it is sold, scrapped, or formally declared off the road, it needs either: In practice, failing to insure or SORN it may lead to penalties under Continuous Insurance Enforcement (CIE) rules.

  • Valid insurance, or
  • A Statutory Off Road notice (SORN)

Key steps when you inherit a car

A little admin now may save you from fines, invalid claims, and a heap of stress later on.

  • Contact the previous insurance provider to inform them of the situation
  • Arrange temporary insurance if you probably need immediate short-term cover
  • Secure long-term insurance if you plan to keep the vehicle
  • Sort a SORN if you are not insuring or driving it straight away
  • Transfer the ownership with the DVLA (using the V5C logbook or applying for a new one)

So, what should you do next?

If you have inherited a car, do not delay sorting the insurance.
