Non-standard car insurance is cover for a vehicle, driver or use that falls outside an insurer’s ordinary acceptance rules. It is not one single policy type. The term may include modified, imported, classic or unusual vehicles, drivers with convictions or cancellations, and specialist business use.
Why ordinary insurers may not quote
Mass-market quotation systems are designed for common risks. An unusual vehicle specification, high value, specialist parts, serious conviction or complex use may need an underwriter to examine the details rather than relying on standard questions.
A refusal does not mean the vehicle or driver is uninsurable. Another insurer may use different acceptance rules, although the choice can be narrower and the premium or excess higher.
Vehicles needing specialist consideration
Modified, kit-built, imported, classic, high-performance and heavily adapted vehicles can require specialist cover. Give the exact model and disclose modifications accurately, including changes made by a previous owner where known.
Check how modifications are valued after a claim. Some policies replace modified parts, while others pay only for standard equivalents or use a stated or agreed value subject to conditions.
Drivers with an unusual history
Convictions, disqualifications, several claims, previous policy cancellations or a foreign driving history can fall outside a standard insurer’s rules. Answer only the questions asked, but answer them fully and accurately. If a quotation form cannot describe the circumstances properly, speak to the insurer or a specialist broker.
Business and specialist use
Courier work, taxi or private-hire driving, carrying goods for payment, motor-trade activity and some high-mileage business use need more than ordinary social or commuting cover. Describe the work, journeys, goods, drivers and expected mileage. A general statement that “business use” is included does not cover every paid activity.
Comparing policies
Compare the same permitted use and protection, not just the premium. Check the total excess, mileage limits, driver restrictions, security conditions, agreed-value terms, replacement-parts basis and whether modifications are covered. Monthly instalments may also increase the total payable.
Confirm who the insurer is and check an unfamiliar broker or intermediary on the Financial Conduct Authority’s register before paying.
