A long claim is not automatically evidence of poor handling, but the insurer should be able to explain what it is waiting for and what will happen next.
What usually causes delay?
Common causes include waiting for repair estimates, engineer inspections, police information, witness statements, third-party responses or medical evidence. A theft claim may involve security checks and recovery enquiries. A write-off can also be delayed if the vehicle's value is disputed.
Liability can be the slowest part
If both drivers give different accounts, insurers may need photographs, dashcam footage, road-layout information or witness evidence before agreeing responsibility. Multi-vehicle accidents can be particularly complicated because more than two insurers may be involved.
Keep the insurer supplied with information
Keep a note of the claim number, handler's name and dates of important conversations. If the vehicle is awaiting repair, ask what stage the claim has reached and whether anything specific is outstanding. Respond promptly when documents or evidence are requested.
When should you chase?
Ask for an explanation of the outstanding issue and a realistic next step rather than simply asking when the claim will finish if nothing appears to be happening. This makes it easier to identify whether the delay is with the insurer, repairer, another insurer or an external report.
What if the delay becomes unreasonable?
Use the insurer's formal complaints process if you believe the claim is being handled poorly or unnecessary delays continue. The Financial Ombudsman Service can consider complaints about insurance handling after the business has had the opportunity to respond.
