Wasnt expecting it to be that straightforward. Pleasantly surprised.

The simplest approach is to describe a normal working week to the insurer. Explain where you drive, how often you travel to work and whether you visit customers or other sites. Then check that the policy schedule records the correct class of use.

What counts as commuting?

Commuting usually means travelling between home and a permanent place of work. If you drive to the station and continue by train, some insurers still treat the car journey as commuting. Check the wording rather than assuming a short part of the journey does not count.

When business use may be needed

If you drive to meetings, visit customers, travel between offices or use your own car for other work journeys, you may need business use. The exact classes and definitions vary by insurer, so describe what you actually do and ask which category applies.

Business use is not the same as deliveries or hire and reward

Ordinary business use may not cover carrying goods for payment, food delivery, parcel delivery, taxi work or private hire. Those activities can require specialist insurance. Do not assume that adding “business use” makes every form of paid driving acceptable.

What if your work pattern changes?

Starting a new job, returning to the office, becoming self-employed or visiting clients more often can change how the car is used. Tell the insurer about a material change when the policy requires you to do so.

Check every regular driver

Check their use is covered too if a named driver also uses the car for work. The policy may distinguish between business use by the policyholder and use by other drivers.

Commuting to a regular workplace

Driving between home and one regular place of work normally needs commuting use rather than social-only cover. If commuting is excluded, the policy should not be relied on for that journey.

Driving during the working day

Travelling to customers, meetings, different sites or other work locations can require business use. Ordinary commuting cover is not a substitute for business use where the journey itself forms part of the job.
