Are Automatics More Expensive to Insure Than Manuals?

An automatic is not automatically dearer to insure than a manual. The answer depends on the exact make, model and version, as well as the driver. Compare quotations for the actual cars rather than treating the gearbox as the deciding factor.

Why prices can differ

Automatic and manual versions can have different purchase prices, performance, repair costs and insurance groups. Claims experience for each version may also differ. These factors can move the premium in either direction.

The driver still matters

Age, experience, licence type, claims, convictions, address, mileage and use remain important. A driver with an automatic-only licence cannot legally drive a manual car, and the licence details supplied to the insurer must be accurate.

Repair cost and technology

A modern automatic gearbox can be expensive to repair, but that does not mean every automatic attracts a higher premium. Manual vehicles also vary greatly in parts prices, repair time, value and performance.

Electric and hybrid cars

Most electric cars and many hybrids do not use a conventional manual gearbox. Their insurance cost is influenced by battery repair, vehicle value, performance, parts and specialist labour rather than the absence of a clutch pedal alone.

How to compare properly

Obtain quotations using the correct registration or full model description. Keep the drivers, mileage, use, address and excess identical. Also compare fuel, tax, servicing and likely repair costs before deciding which version is cheaper overall.
